Rock Triaxial Tests: Global Deformation vs Local Strain Measurements—Implications

چکیده

Abstract Accurate stress–strain measurements in triaxial tests are critical to compute reliable mechanical parameters. We focus on compliance at the interfaces between specimen and endcaps, test specimens under various conditions using different instrumentation protocols. The tested materials include aluminum, Eagle Ford shale, Berea sandstone, Jubaila carbonate. Results obtained following common practice reveal that surface roughness specimen-endcap leads marked seating effects, affects all cap-to-cap based hinders ultrasonic energy transmission. In particular, deformation accentuate hysteretic behavior, magnify biases caused by bending tilting (triggered uneven surfaces misalignment), affect estimation of rock parameters, from stiffness Biot’s ?-parameter. Higher confining pressure diminishes effects. Local specimen-bonded strain gauges preferred (Note: mounting sleeves is ill-advised). confirm elastic moduli derived wave propagation higher than quasi-static determined local gauges, probably due lower level preferential high-velocity travel path for first arrivals.

Investigation of Stress-Strain Behavior of Plastic Concrete Using Monotonic Triaxial Compression Tests

In this paper, the mechanical behavior of plastic concrete being used in the cut-off walls of earth dams has been studied. To do the task, triaxial compression tests on the specimens in various ages and mix designs under different confining pressures have been done and the stress-strain behavior of such materials and their strength parameter changes has been experimentally investigated. It has ...

Local vs . Global : Intelligent Local Face Recognition

Face recognition in real world applications is a very difficult task because of image misalignments, pose and illumination variations, or occlusions. Many researchers in this field have investigated both face representation and classification techniques able to deal with these drawbacks. However, none of them is free from limitations. Early proposed algorithms were generally holistic, in the se...

Treewidth in Verification: Local vs. Global

The treewidth of a graph measures how close the graph is to a tree. Many problems that are intractable for general graphs, are tractable when the graph has bounded treewidth. Recent works study the complexity of model checking for state transition systems of bounded treewidth. There is little reason to believe, however, that the treewidth of the state transition graphs of real systems, which we...

Local vs. Global Variables for Spin Glasses

We discuss a framework for understanding why spin glasses differ so remarkably from homogeneous systems like ferromagnets, in the context of the sharply divergent low temperature behavior of shortand infinite-range versions of the same model. Our analysis is grounded in understanding the distinction between two broad classes of thermodynamic variables – those that describe the global features o...
